Brown Bear Newsletter: October 2020

Fall is in the air! October brings so many fun activities and a mix of weather too. Please provide a warmer complete set of extra clothes to keep in your child’s cubby. Mornings are needing a jacket too. We go outside at 10:00 and 4:00.
October is about Community Helpers. I usually arrange for a dentist, police officer, and firefighters to visit. This year because of covid things are different sadly. Sitting in a police officer’s car, seeing the firefighters’ truck up close and watching the firefighter gear up, or examining dental tools, were always a highlight. Our local firefighters have created fire safety videos which they have offered to me. I am still working on contacting the police department and a dentist.
Your child will be made aware of 911 and who will come depending on the situation, as in the ambulance, firefighters, or police officers. It is important for them to know 911 even at this young age, because there have been times that children have had to use it to save the day. We will discuss stranger awareness, gun safety, and that the police are our friends.
We will practice “stop, drop, and roll,” “get out, stay out,”  “stay low and crawl.”  I urge you to discuss and practice a meeting place if ever there really is a fire. Sunset Academy practices fire and tornado drills, so your child is used to “practicing.”
The importance of healthy eating and proper brushing technique is a focus for dental health.
We will continue learning beginning word sounds and letter recognition with upper and lower case II & Oo this month. I prefer to start with vowels so they can expand into sounding out words as we add consonants. Reading with your child is so important, putting your finger under words as you read is helpful. Asking questions as you go along helps in comprehension. Ask your child to point out a specific letter for recognition on the page.
The children are used to the routine and automatically sign in every morning to practice their name. I can’t  thank Lindsay Cole enough, (Eva’s Mom), for her generosity a month ago! She supplied dry erase markers, washable markers, crayons, glue sticks, so many surprises even garbage bags to take home our classroom recycling, to save the earth. The children are being responsible about only using their own pencil bag of supplies and are excited to draw or write.
Friday, October 30, We will have a Halloween Celebration after nap. I will put a sign-up sheet in the entryway for snacks. We will build edible spiders, ghosts, and pumpkins with the items you provide. Your child may bring their costume to school in a bag they can put on after nap. Sunset Academy requests no weapons, please.
If you are interested in a conference there will be a sign-up sheet in the entryway for October 20. I am happy to call you anytime to chat. If you ever have questions email is best sunsetacademybrownbears@gmail.com
I would appreciate it if you could please help me by having your child use the restroom before you bring them to school. I am alone with 10 children. 7:30-9:00 I am working on small group time with the children and this prevents continuous interruptions as each child arrives. The class uses the restroom as a group at 9:30 before snack. Somedays we have gone 4 times in the first hour.
Thank you for all you do and for sharing your wonderful children with me. Remember to laugh lots, hug em, love em, and READ, READ, READ! They grow fast.
Stay well, Diane
